And we also have some great free stories and books to share with you in this newsletter, so please stick around and check those out in the latter part of this message.

Call for Submissions – Maine Character Energy Charity Anthology

Attention writers! In response to the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine mass shooting in October, Rogue Owl Press is publishing a charity collection with 100% of proceeds benefiting Everytown for Gun Safety in honor of the victims. Maine Character Energy, edited by Sarah Parke, is seeking short-story submissions (up to 8,000 words) in all genres (creative nonfiction, literary, popular/speculative fiction) that feature a strong Maine setting and celebrate Maine characters. We hope you'll consider submitting your work!

New Managing Editor at the Press

We also have another important announcement as we continue to build upon the foundation for publishing startling stories that started back in 2021. Rogue Owl Press now has a managing editor—please welcome Rebecca McKenna into this new role!

Rebecca has been assisting with various editing duties at the press since its inception, and I’m so thrilled to welcome her into this broader and more formalized position. Going Forward, Rebecca will be working with on virtually every aspect of the press as we build out our operation strategically and work through the publication process for our forthcoming titles. Additionally, she will be assisting with editing manuscripts and providing helpful feedback to our authors before publication. Our team is grateful to have Rebecca in this new role to help take Rogue Owl to the next level.

On October 13, 2023, Rebecca McKenna celebrated the release of Horrors of the Deep with a reading at the Iota Short Forms Conference. After, conference participants asked questions about the story, the book, and what it is like to work on an anthology. McKenna was invited to stay and listen to readings by conference attendees—an incredible ending to a fun night.

Richard Squires recently published his second book review in American Book Review. Titled Save the Village, the novel is about New York City’s awesome Greenwich Village. You can read part of the review and purchase the journal here.
